Can you see the Big 5 in Amboseli National Park?

Amboseli National Park also known as the home of African Elephant is located 365 kilometers south east of Nairobi, Kajiado County in Kenya. The park is 392km2 in size at the core of an 8000km2 ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The dominant vegetation in the park is acacia woodland, rocky thorny bushes, swamps marshland and a Pleistocene lake known as Lake Amboseli. Its home to iconic wildlife hosting four of the big five from lions to graceful zebras and countless species of birds in its swampy and wetland areas.

Amboseli is famed for its generous opportunities for close encounters with free roaming members of the big five. The park is a home to a large number of African elephants creating a perfect opportunity for an up and close view of up to fifty herds of elephants in one safari, making it a prime destination for both photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Amboseli has an endless underground water supply filtered through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from Kilimanjaro’s ice cap which funnel into two clear water springs in the heart of the park. However climatic pendulum can swing from drought to flood as was witnessed in the 1990’s whereby ceaseless rains changed Amboseli into a swamp. Later on the rained failed and the grass covered plains turned to dust. In Amboseli’s case it is big skies and far horizons combined with swampy springs and dry and dusty earth trampled by hundreds of animals. Its unique charm lies in its authentic blend of the rich Maasai culture which offers an ability of unforgettable safari experience in an inspiring natural beauty of mother nature and making it a must visit destination for anyone looking to experience the magic of the Kenyan wilderness

There are several places to stay in Amboseli where one can have views of the African elephants and Mt. Kilimanjaro. The accommodations include the Elerai Tented camp, Tortilis Tented Camp and Kilima Safari Lodge.
