Buffalo Springs National Reserve

Buffalo Springs National Reserve is a protected area in Isiolo County and is located south of Samburu National Reserve, which lies on the other side of Ewaso Nyiro River. It is named after an oasis of clear water near its western end. The reserve has an area of 131km2. The climate is hot, dry and semi-arid. Wildlife in Buffalo Springs National Reserve includes; Grant’s zebra, and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. Other species of mammals includes; Reticulated giraffe, African bush elephant, oryx, gerenuk, African buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena. The river is home to hippopotamuses and crocodiles. Buffalo National Reserve is a birders paradise with over 365 species of birds. Somali Ostriches are widespread within the national reserve. It is larger than the Masai Ostrich and is distinctive for its indigo legs and neck.
