Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Ngorongoro district, 180 km west of Arusha city in Arusha region within the crater highlands geological area of northeastern Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. The floor is an area of over 102 square miles, includes a large soda lake and forms a perfectly preserved and self-contained habitat for a huge number and variety of animal species. In fact, more than 30000 animals call Ngorongoro crater their home.
Wildlife in Ngorongoro conservation includes black rhinos, African buffaloes, wildebeests, spotted hyenas, zebras, elands, gazelles, elephants, lions, antelope, jackals, hippos among others.
Ngorongoro conservancy has sheltered more than 500 bird species from the biggest bird to the smallest. The area has both permanent and migratory birds. The most common birds are; ostriches, secretary birds, Kori bustard, open billed stork, flamingos, pelicans, Fischer’s lovebird, kingfisher, hamerkop among others.
