Shaba National Reserve
About Us
Shaba National Reserve is a protected area in Isiolo County. It is located east of Samburu National Park and north of Mount Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro River runs 34 km along the northern boundary of the reserve. The reserve is a semi-arid dotted with isolated hills and plentiful springs. Shaba hill in the south, with its volcanic formations rises to 2145m above sea level from the relatively flat surrounding country.
Wildlife in Shaba National Reserve includes; warthogs, bat eared foxes, common eland, impalas, Grant’s gazelle, Beisa Oryx, greater kudus, lesser kudus, African leopards and elephants. Shaba is also known for large prides of lions, Night predators include black-bucked jackals, striped hyenas and spotted hyenas. The reserve is home to rare species that includes; Reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and endangered Grevy’s zebra.
Bird life is plentiful in Shaba National Reserve and the nearly and poorly known William’s lark is found in the reserve in the regions of rocky lava semi desert with low Barlevia shrubs. Shaba is also home to regionally threatened birds that include the sporadically visiting African darter and great egret and the resident white-headed vulture, martial eagle and yellow billed oxpecker.
