Samburu National Reserve is a game reserve on the banks of Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu Kenya. It is 165 km 2 in size and it is located 350 km from Nairobi. Located in the arid region of the Northern part of Kenya. In the middle of the reserve, the Ewaso Ngiro River flows through doum palm groves and thick river line forests. The river provides water without which the animals in this arid region could not survive.
There is a wide variety of animals and bird life seen at Samburu National Reserve. The reserve hosts the “Special Five of the North” which includes; Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk (Giraffe Antelope), Beisa Oryx and the critically endangered Grevy's Zebra (Mickey Mouse Ears).
Other mammals frequently seen in the park include olive baboons, warthogs, Grant's Gazelles, Kirk’s dik dik, Impalas and waterbucks. A black Rhinoceros population has been reintroduced to the park after an absence of 25 years due to heavy poaching.
